Attendo's history

Attendo’s history began in February 1985. It was a time when nearly all health and social care was handled by public monopolies. Hardly anyone realised that private actors could be a part of the Nordic welfare model.

A few entrepreneurs within the former state company Procordia came up with the idea to modernise the care for older people. They wrote a business plan that focused on offering new, flexible solutions for high quality care in a society with an ageing population.

Despite the tough conditions, they received their first contract for conducting home care services in Stocksund. Attendo continue to do this today – but also much, much more.
Today, Attendo has more than 19,000 employees at over 500 units in Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark. 24,000 clients come to us to have their care needs met, and over three quarter of a million patients book health or dental care with us in Finland.

We are the industry’s leading actor with regard to quality work, and we consistently receive high ratings from clients, patients, relatives, employees and customers.

Attendo's innovations

Attendo was founded with a clear goal to be a leader in high quality care. In the climate of the times, the very idea that a private company could handle a part of publicly run care, was an innovation in and of itself.

In 1987, Attendo (then called Svensk Hemservice AB) received its first contract in Danderyd. The first innovation occurred shortly thereafter when a home journal for social documentation was introduced, something that later became legislated by law.

Early on, Attendo developed a system with a contact person, which meant that each client should have a personally appointed and responsible contact person who has the overall responsibility for all activities. In 1992, when Attendo was given its first assignment outside of Stockholm - the nursing home Skogshill in Malmö - Malmö municipality, as the first municipality, conducted a client survey, something that previously was not seen as necessary.

Over the next ten years, a long list of quality innovations occurred. Attendo introduced an our own medical head nurse (MAS) for follow-up and evaluation of the service. The next step was taken when a central independent quality audit of all operations was introduced. In conjunction with this, analyses of quality data were digitalised. Shortly after the new millennium, Attendo became the first to have an independent quality department.

During the 00s, the innovations continued within digital quality tools. In 2005, Attendo created the first award winning quality system AQ05. After that, Attendo introduced electronic reporting of quality data. The system was updated in 2009 to AQ09, 2013 to AQ13 and after the latest update, it is now called AQ16. The new version receives and analyses over 1 billion activities annually provided to Attendo’s more than 24,000 clients.

At the end of the 00s, Attendo began to focus more on user satisfaction and transparency. As a part of this, Attendo offers all clients own time with their contact person. In 2009, Attendo launched The Quality Thermometer that measures the quality of each individual unit. After that, Attendo began to openly disclose reports according to Lex Sarah and Lex Maria on its website.

During the beginning of the 10s, Attendo developed a strategy for evidence based praxis so that all operations follow the latest research findings. As the first company in the industry, Attendo presented an Annual Quality Report in May 2012. The Quality report is reported annually, and has since 2014, been divided into Attendo’s three business areas.

Attendo launched suggestions for national quality follow-up – Senior Lotsen. At this time, Attendo even opened its first lifestyle living, that further adapts the environment and activities to the clients preferences and interests.

Ownership history

The origins of today’s Attendo come from the wholly state-owned company Procordia, which in the 1980s ran a large number of different operations mainly in consumer goods. At the beginning of the 1990s, Procordia was partly privatised, and Attendo received its first private owner in the form Industri Kapital (known today as IK Investment Partners).

Since 1995, ownership of Attendo has wandered through the two services companies Sodexho and TeleLarm Care, to Bridgepoint and then back to IK Investment Partners.

During these years, key employees and managers in Attendo were offered to buy shares in the company, building the base of the broad ownership among management and employees in Attendo.

Timeline

1987-1992        
State owned Procordia is the first owner and forms Procordia Service. It is the beginning of a modern group within safety, care and service.

1993-1994         
Yesterday’s Attendo is privatised and Industri Kapital takes over ownership. The Group develops adding several services aimed at care for older people.

1995-2000         
French services company Sodexho buys what later becomes Attendo. The Group’s services and staffing services are developed.

2000-2005         
Gustaf Douglas and Melker Schörling, through the company TeleLarm Care, which was an important piece of the puzzle in the founding of Attendo, take over as owners. At the beginning of this period, the name is changed to Attendo and the quality concept is developed.

2005-2006         
Bridgepoint recruits and develops Attendo into a pure health and social care company, by selling the safety alarm and alarm center operations.

2007-2015         
IK Investment Partners (Formerly Industri Kapital) repurchases Attendo and focuses on expanding operations in the Nordic region, i.e. through acquisition of MedOne in Finland.
